Golf in Aruba
Aruba Golf Club
East of Sun Nicolas
The greens are Astroturf, and goats sometimes get in the way, but this odd little golf course is a lot of fun. And the fee is only $10. Water hazards and send traps add a challenge to the nine-hole course, which can be played from different tees during 18-hole rounds. Golf carts and clubs are available at the pro shop, and restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch.
Tierra del Sol
Northwest end of the island
Tee times 7am-5pm daily
Aruba has only one championship golf course, and it’s beauty, with 18 holes overlooking Aruba’s northwest coast. Designed by Robert Trent Jones II, Tierra del Sol is a splash of green in the desert countryside – a Palm-Springs-in-the-Caribbean experience.
Tee times are available at a prime time high-season fee of $133. During the afternoon, fees drop to $98, and low-season play is priced at $88 in the mornings and $68 in the afternoons. The real bargain is five days of golf from May through October for $380. If you plan to spend a lot of time on the golf course during your vacation, compare package deals offered by many of the major resorts.
As a full-service country club and residential development, Tierra del Sol’s facilities include a full-length practice range, putting greens, chipping areas, a luxurious clubhouse, a well-stocked pro shop, a full service gourmet restaurant, and a grill off the 18th green. Views from almost any area of the club include turquoise sea, rolling terrain, and desert vegetation growing around huge boulder formations. The picturesque California Lighthouse is in the distance and is particularly stunning from the third hole.
Wind is major obstacle on this par-71, 6,811-yard course. But, the constant breeze also makes play comfortably cool most of the time. A few water hazards add a bit more challenge, but the fairways are wide and planted in lush, well-groomed Bermuda grass.
Callaway clubs ($45) and shoes ($10) may be rented, and a storage locker is available ($5) for the entire length of your vacation. Golf carts are outfitted with a Parview GPS satellite dish and a 10.4-inch color screen that projects green overviews and gives the exact distance from the cart to the center of the green, electronic scoring, and two-way communication with the clubhouse.
L.G. Smith Blvd/Main Hwy
Across from La Cabana Resort/Eagle beach
Golf is the only half fun at this something-for-everyone entertainment center. Two excellent 18-hole miniature courses are laid out around a moan filled with paddle and bumper boats. Elsewhere on the property, there’s a batting cage, a bank of video games, and a mini-car race track.
Meals, snacks, and drinks are served at a casual on-site restaurant and a livery bar. The Black Hog Saloon throws a BBQ Bash every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30-9:30 at a cost of $35 for adults and $20 for kids 12 and under. The price includes a barbecue dinner, unlimited draft beer and soft drinks, around of golf, and a paddleboat ride. Entertainment stars the Magnificent Horse and Harley Show with horse celebrities from Rancho El Paso. Alfredo’s Restaurant offers nightly specials with an Italian flavor that they claim is “just like Boston’s North End” – an area famous for having more than 100 authentic Italian restaurants in a space of five-blocks.
